The cyberpunk scene is about to get a serious jolt. Amazon Prime Video has officially confirmed the return of a classic: a brand new remake of Ghost in the Shell. It premieres worldwide on July 7, 2026, bringing Major Motoko Kusanagi back into action with Section 9. It’s arriving at a time when the genre is gaining momentum again, and the promise here is clear — a fresh take that still respects what made the original so iconic.

  • Global Launch: The series drops July 7 on Prime Video in most regions.

  • Creative Team: Animation comes from Science SARU (Dandadan), directed by Moko-chan, with character designs by Shuhei Handa (Kill la Kill).

  • Story Setup: Set in the late 21st century, it follows Kusanagi as she tracks cybercriminals and so-called “ghost hackers” in a world where the line between human and machine is almost gone.

Ghost in the shell, 2026 new adaptation

This new version looks like it’s aiming to dig deeper into the source material, sticking closer to the original manga than past adaptations. Early footage hints at a dense, hyper-connected world, positioning the series as the start of a “new era” for cyberpunk.

With EnJoe Toh handling the script, the focus seems to be right where it should be: identity, consciousness and what it really means to stay human in a system run by machines and megacorps.
